On When We Are Ancient

January 5, 2010

We will be arm in bony arm, entwined.

People will exclaim “Oh, aren’t they cute” as we pass, never knowing of the copious amounts of alcohol we consumed (thoroughly enjoyed with your demon weed and my chain-smoked cigarettes), our collective petty meanness’s of youth, nor the naughty things we did in the front or back seats of cars.

Hidden in the wrinkles of our softly carved faces the tear-track’s traces will be deeply worn; furrowed scars of disappointments we got or gave on our lengthy journey.  The joy will be equally as embedded there, embellishing eyes and embracing our lips in sweet folds of laughter.

They won’t see the individual sudden stops, or leaps – they’ll just see the final destination, the sum total of us, of friends. And it will give them a longing to reclaim THIER friend, or the incentive to become one, find one.  Ensuring they too have an arm to lace, against the otherwise lonely walk.

Yes, that’s it – our contribution, well, one of many, will be our stalwart friendship.

Oh my gosh!!.. Just found you over to Nancy’s while admiring her silk rose brooch! I have been trying little by little to catch up with everybody, since my “big bad move”, and I’m so glad to now catch up with you too! Beautiful post, Jennifer!.. I’m hoping you enjoyed the holidays, and I’m wishing you all the best for 2010! Hope to be visiting again with you soon! ~tina
